    20.09.2004

Hervé Tum, Cameroonian striker in F C Metz, France, opens up to Cameroon Tribune

You are among the best scorers in the French football league. This should certainly be a dream come true.

Actually, four footballers are presently heading the chart of scorers. There is one person with four goals and three of us with three goals each. I am happy. It is the fruit of collective hard work in my team. This is a great stimulus for my subsequent outings.

Many people are wondering from where you get your strength.

I derive my energy from good preparation, especially during friendly matches. Actually, I scored at least a goal in all the friendly encounters which we played. My performance is therefore a continuation of the efforts which I put in preparing for this season.

Until recently, few Cameroonians knew you. Where were you hiding?

I was hiding in Switzerland. It is true that Swiss football is not as competitive as the French football. In the same light it is not properly covered by the media. With regards to this, I could say that I was in the dark. In the same light, when I was in Bale, Switzerland, I never used to play all the matches. I was not in the limelight. Today, however, I am in a team where I can exhibit my talents. I am also sure that Cameroonians will have the opportunity of discovering me more since the press in Cameroon follows up the French football league meticulously.

You have also joined the national team.

Yes. I just reintegrated the team recently. But as you know, I am not making my debut in the National Football team. I have been with the team since 1998. I was always called to camp. However it is now that I am occupying front stage. It is good for me and for Cameroonian football as a whole.

But you have not been shining in the national team?

I have played only two matches in the National team. The first encounter was against Benin and the second against Egypt. You cannot judge me from this alone. I hope, with time, I will be able to prove my worth.

So what should Cameroonian expect of you in the national tam?

I hope I would be able to bring an additional impetus to the team. What is important is not to be selected to join the team. What each player should ask is: ‘what I am bringing to the team?’ I will try to give my best.

How is life in your new club?

It is alright. I arrived in Metz in July and I am very comfortable in the club. There are a lot of Africans around me who make me to feel at home. We are like a family.

    Was the integration process easy?

Yes. I am the type of person who goes towards people. I am a very lively person. This makes it easy for me to be accepted by a group. I can create new friends easily. This attitude has made me to be at ease with a lot of my team mates.

Tell us a bit about yourself. Who is Hervé Tum?

(Laughs) I am a Cameroonian, just like you. I hail from the Nyong and Kelle Division. I started my sports career in Cercle Sportive of Eseka; a Second Division team. Thereafter, I enrolled in Kadji Sport Academy. From there, I went to Europe. I was in FC Bale, Switzerland before moving to Metz.

    What about your family?

Most of my family members are in Cameroon. Some of my brothers are in Europe. I live with a girlfriend. I also have a little daughter of four. She is called Lourine.

What do you think about marriage?

It is an honourable venture. I am planning to get married to my girlfriend. We are just waiting for the right moment; when we are ready.

What are the things you cherish in life?

I love peace. I also like to see everybody happy. I love music and being with friends. I always try to share good moments with my friends and to make people around me happy.

And what do you detest most?

(Pensive) I do not like to see sad people. It hurts me to see a person cry. I am also frustrated when I see a person in pains.

People have the impression that you are on an energy enhancing diet?

Not really. I love good food, especially African dishes. I am not exhorting in my diet and feeding. I share all that can be eaten. I am not complicated in this domain.

Is there an incident in your life whose memory lingers on?

(Sad) Yes. The death of my father and my elder brother were great set backs in my life. The passing away of my father was tragic. But the death of my elder brother was even more tragic. He died in a road accident in Cameroon. He was somebody with whom I shared a lot. His death was a big blow to me.

Are there any memories of your childhood that you cherish?

Yes. The memory of the start of my career as footballer and that of all the good goals that I have scored are still so vivid in my mind.

Is there anything which you would like accomplish in your life time; something that is just like a calling?

Yes. I would like to do something good to all who are dear to me.

Have you always dreamt of being a footballer?

(Smiles) Not at all. All those who are close to me know that my father did not like football. He wanted me to concentrate on my studies. But I was a stubborn boy who always wanted to go out and play football. (laughs) I can fondly remember when he asked me to read and I would send my shoes through the window so that he should not know I am going to play. I would then sneak out of the house and meet friends with whom I would play football until late at night. I always felt fine playing football.

    Any message to Cameroonians?

They should be ambitious and above all should believe in themselves. When you have confidence in yourself there is nothing which you can’t do. There will always be a way to get out of difficult situations.
