Djemba-Djemba wants 30 games
utvlive.com
Eric Djemba-Djemba has set himself a 30-game target for Manchester United this season as he attempts to prove he is worthy of a place in Sir Alex Ferguson`s squad.
The Cameroon midfielder has failed to win over the United support since his £3.5million move from Nantes 18 months ago and Ferguson has hinted he would be prepared to release the 24-year-old if a suitable offer was made.
Benfica and Paris St Germain are both believed to have inquired about Djemba-Djemba but unless they make a firm bid before Monday`s transfer deadline, the Doula-born player will be staying where he is.
And that suits the Djemba-Djemba just fine because he is not prepared to give up on his United dream just yet, insisting he can still improve and cement a regular place in Ferguson`s first team plans.
"I have played 17 matches so far this season," he said. "If I can reach 30 by the end of the season that would be very good for me.
"I know I can play and I have progressed a lot since I came here but I am still learning. Manchester United is a big team, with big players, so I have to wait for my time."
Although he started the season in Ferguson`s side, his more recent appearances have been limited to domestic cup competitions and scope for another run-out in the Carling Cup came to an end with Wednesday`s semi-final exit to Chelsea.
However, he should play against Middlesbrough tomorrow as United look to make up for their midweek disappointment by advancing to the fifth round of the FA Cup at the expense of Old Trafford old-boy Steve McClaren.
Ferguson`s former assistant has tended to make life difficult for the Red Devils on his return trips and Boro had the better of a 1-1 draw the last time they headed to the north-west.
Since then though, United have cruised to a 2-0 win at the Riverside on New Years Day and will start heavy favourites to confirm that form.
Ferguson already knows he will be without suspended skipper Roy Keane and ankle-injury victim Darren Fletcher and is likely to freshen his squad up in the hope of getting a far more convincing performance from his team than the one which pitched them into an unwanted third-round replay in Exeter three weeks ago.
Alan Smith is in line for a recall providing the former Leeds man recovers from an ankle problem.
Wayne Rooney, whose introduction for the final half-hour against Chelsea sparked a vast improvement in form, should also play along with goalkeeper Tim Howard, who has been exonerated by his manager for Damien Duff`s cruel late winner on Wednesday.
