Impôt, Union Abong Mbang Contest Leadership
The two clubs with seven points each, are fighting for the driver seat in Pool B.
Impot FC of Yaoudne and Union Abong Mbang have ended the reign of Union Douala in Pool B of the ongoing round robin tournament, dubbed Interpools. The change in leadership at the helm of the group was as a result of a poor performance of the Douala-based team during the third day of play last Saturday. Union Abong Mbang beat the 50-year-old team, 1-0, and as such dwindled their hope of remaining in the elite league next season.
The defeat of Union Douala was received with thunderous applause by fans of the Buea-based teams. The heavy applause was either because the spectators admired the good football that they watched or simply because many people hold that Union Douala, which played in Division I this season, is the "bete noire" of Buea-based teams. The loquacious Union Douala supporters, who for the first two playing days returned from the pitch with their heads high as they walloped their opponents bagging six points with a plus three goal difference, were silenced. Many Union Douala supporters attribute their defeat to the absence of two ace players — Bila and Yosse Eric now training with the Junior National team.
In another spectacular match, Impôt Yaounde thrashed Epervier of Ebolowa 4 — 0. The team now has seven points from two victories and one defeat. They shared the first position with Union Abong Mbang, but have an edge from a superior goal difference. Union Douala, with six points, has been pushed to an uncomfortable third position on the unofficial classification table.
A.S. Douala II edged Pilote of Garoua 1 — 0 to move to the 4th position with four points. Pilote Garoua which tails the league table with no point is still staying on in the tournament in respect of the rules of the game; else they would have packed their bags to Pilote to Garoua. Their chances of grabbing one of the two available D I tickets in pool B are all lostver.
The third playing day in Pool B was the most offensive so far with six goals scored for the three matches played. Several cases of violence and injustice were recorded with three players shown red cards — Koulayon Laurent and Abougakary from Pilote Garoua and Boulouni Guy of AS Douala.
Victories and defeats apart, many fans left Molyko Stadium questioning whether the playing of South West and Littoral teams out of their home grounds has brought in less or more gate takings. A rough estimate indicates that less than one thousand spectators were at the Molyko stadium on 3rd December. A very small figure when we take into consideration that the match was taking place on a Saturday when many people are supposedly resting.
The fourth playing day on 7th December will feature AS Douala II against Epervier of Ebolowa, Union Abong Mbang versus Pilot Garoua, Impôt Yaounde versus Union Abong Mbang.
