Football: Impots FC Qualifies for Cup Final
The second finalist would be know after a replay of the Unisports Vs Coton Sport encounter.
The Central homologation commission of the Cameroon Football Federation, FECAFOOT, yesterday took decisions on the return leg of the semi-final matches for the Cup of Cameroon that ended in confusion. The first decision concerns the Impots FC Vs Sahel FC match that was expected to be played on 23th October 2005 at the Doaula Reunification stadium. Sahel Maroua, failed to travel to Douala. The team that was beaten 0- 2 by Impots in the away match, had earlier sent a letter to the General Manager of the Cameroon Football Federation, FECAFOOT, requesting that the match be reprogrammed. But their letter was not taken into consideration by FECAFOOT. This notwithstanding, Sahel FC did not show up at the Reunification stadium last Sunday. For failing to travel to Douala, the Maroua-based team loses the match by penalty. Impots thus grabs the three points that were at stake and qualifies for the final.
The second decision was on the Unisports Vs Coton Sport encounter that was played at the Reunification stadium last Sunday. After 90 minutes of the encounter, Coton Sport was leading 1 — 0. The scores placed both teams at an aggregate score of 2-2 after the away and home matches. The referee thus requested that the match be prolonged to determine the finalist. Unisports, however, refused to continue to play on the grounds that they had qualified for the final. They based their argument on the home and away match rule which states that in case of a draw in aggregate goals, the away goals count double. The Bafang team outplayed Coton 2-1 in the away match. Coton sport, on the other hand, also considered itself as being qualified for the final. They based their argument on a decision by an extraordinary general assembly of FECAFOOT in April 2003 and subsequent circulars cancelling the home and away rule in semi final matches for the Cup of Cameroon on grounds that they were played on a neutral ground.
Yesterday, members of the central homologation commission opted for a replay of the match. They decision was taken because the modification of the home and away rule was not yet included in FECAFOOT texts binding competitions. The match will be replayed at the same venue (Douala Reunification stadium), with the same officials. The new rule cancelling the home and away advantage will be applied. The General manager of FECAFOOT has been instructed to inform the teams concerned.
