University Games : Yaounde I Grabs Two Gold Medals
The ladies lawn tennis teams of the University of Yaounde I won the first gold medal of the competition.
The ongoing University Games in Dschang rumbles into its fourth day today with all participating teams fully engaged and determined to win. Some 1400 athletes from 14 institutions of higher learning in the country are vying for medals in nine sports disciplines. Three days after the games kicked-off, the medals harvest has already begun in some of the disciplines, notably Lawn tennis. The University of Yaounde I ladies lawn tennis team won the first gold medal in the competition after beating the team of the University of Dschang 2-0 in the finals. The Yaounde I men yesterday offered the second gold medal to the institution.
In the overall classification yesterday, Yaounde I are champions. At press time, the men’s team finals, single ladies, single men, double men and double ladies competitions were expected to take place. Some indoor games such as wrestling were also expected to kick-off yesterday in the gymnasium of the University of Dschang, while judo competitions will begin today. Competitions in football, basketball, handball, volleyball and table tennis were also expected to continue yesterday.
Earlier programmed to take-off last Saturday, the athletics competition will only begin today due to the poor state of the university stadium caused by rain. The venue of the competition has been moved to the campus of the Institute of Youth and Sports (CENAJES). Authorities of the University of Dschang had carried out some renovation work in the CENAJES campus to enable the athletes compete. Officials of the University say the track was expected to be ready for competition by 12:00 noon yesterday. In effect the construction of the new sports complex of the University of Dschang is yet to be completed. This has hampered the effective take off some competitions.
According to the Rector of the University of Dschang, Jean Louis Dongmo, the project is a colossal one but the challenge of the University now is to ensure that next Saturday’s closing ceremony takes place in the new sports complex.
