University Games: Dschang Sets Pace
Some 1,400 athletes are taking part in the competition.
It was an exciting weekend for inhabitants of the West Province and Dschang in particular. The event was the official kick-off of the eighth edition of the University Games in the campus of the University of Dschang last Saturday. Despite the rain and the chilly weather in Dschang, Cameroonians of all walks of life thronged the university campus to have a glimpse of the colourful opening ceremony.
After seven editions, the University games are back in Dschang were it was born in 1998. For eight days, some 1,400 athletes will be vying for medals in nine disciplines in track and field. These include athletics and other collective sports disciplines.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Mayor of Dschang, Etienne Sonkeng, encouraged the athletes and also wished them a happy stay in Dschang. The President of FENASU, Dr Mrs Dorothy Limunga Njeuma, called on the students to respect the values which the university authorities have strived to foster in their competition. These include determination, honesty, discipline and fair play. She called on sports officials to continue in the same spirit of professionalism as in the previous years. She also called on them to avoid any form of cheating and be veritable models for the athletes.
Opening the games, the Minister of Higher Education said that the fact that they are back to ther birth place is a dream come true. He said that by organising the games in all the six State universities, shows that they have attained one of its major objectives of providing adequate sports infrastructure to all State universities. "It is a veritable success story," he said. He called on the athletes to respect the imperatives of the Olympic spirit that of fair play and also to show solidarity within the teams.
The opening speech by the Minister gave way to the march past by the different delegations and an opening football match between the host university and the University of Yaounde II, Soa.
The University of Dschang outplayed the University of Yaounde II 4-2. The University of Dschang’s goals were scored by by Ndedi (4th min), Tchengang (7th and 9th mins) and Fondje (22nd min). The goals for Yaounde II were scored by Assako (43rd min) and Tapoko (44th min). The final of the 800m athletics earlier programmed to take place on Saturday was postponed to a later date due to the poor state of the track.
Present to encourage the athletes were three members of government: the Minister of Higher Education, Jacques Fame Ndongo, the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Philippe Mbarga Mboa, and the Minister of Youths, Adoum Garoua. Also present were parliamentarians as well as traditional authorities from of the province.
