Cameroon lose out against Costa Rica
William Sunsing grabbed the winner five minutes from time as Costa Rica beat visiting Cameroon 2-1 in a friendly at Estadio Alejandro Morera.
Costa Rica`s top scorer in last year`s World Cup qualifying Hexagonal was in inspirational form as he scored one and set up another to give his side victory over the African side.
The match was the first for both sides as they prepare for their respective regional championships.
Costa Rica open their Gold Cup 2002 campaign on January 18 against Martinique while Cameroon face Congo in the African Nations Cup on January 20.
Sunsing`s match-winning strike came in the 87th minute, when Rolando Fonseca threaded a pass to a streaking Sunsing inside the area. The former New England Revolution and current Herediano star beat the offside trap and scored to give his side victory.
Though he did not score, Fonseca was also a major threat for the home side, constantly winning balls in the midfield and feeding his strikers with precision passes.
Longtime Costa Rican international Hernan Medford had scored the opening goal in the 33rd minute when Fonseca put him through after a great individual effort.
Cameroon bagged the equaliser in the 57th minute after Francois Dikoume shook off several Costa Rican defenders and beat Tico goalkeeper Erick Lonnis.
After their respective regional championships, both sides will now focus on next summer`s World Cup finals. Costa Rica are in Group C along with Brazil, China and Turkey while Cameroon face Germany, Ireland and Saudi Arabia in Group D.
Costa Rica line-up: Erick Lonnis; Giovanni Jara (Rodrigo Cordero, 58), Luis Marin (Jervis Drummond, 46) Reynaldo Parks, Gilberto Martinez; Carlos Castro (Austin Berry, 70), Max Sanchez (Mauricio Solis, 70), Wilmer Lopez, Steven Bryce (Walter Centeno, 64); Rolando Fonseca, Hernan Medford (William Sunsing, 64).
