Arsenal moves into first place; Owen scores 100th goal
LONDON
Arsenal rallied to beat Middlesbrough 2-1 Saturday and take over first place in England`s Premier League.
Previous league leader Newcastle lost 2-1 to visiting Chelsea.
The title chase tightened considerably, with Leeds United moving up to third place by beating Southampton 1-0 on Lee Bowyer`s goal, and Golden Ball Award winner Michael Owen`s 100th goal with Liverpool giving his team a 1-1 tie at West Ham.
Arsenal (11-3-6) and Newcastle (12-5-3) both have 39 points -- though Arsenal`s plus-17 goal differential is better -- while Leeds (10-2-8) has 38, and Liverpool (11-4-4) has 37 and a game in hand.
Defending champion Manchester United (10-6-3, 33 points) takes a four-game winning streak into its game at Fulham on Sunday.
In other games Saturday, Aston Villa tied Tottenham 1-1, Derby beat Blackburn 1-0, Bolton tied Leicester 2-2, Charlton defeated Everton 3-0, and Ipswich beat Sunderland 5-0.
At Highbury, Noel Whelan put Middlesbrough (5-10-4) ahead, but Robert Pires tied the score for Arsenal, and defender Ashley Cole`s diving header with 10 minutes left won it.
At St. James Park, Icelandic striker Eidur Gudjohnsen scored both goals for sixth-place Chelsea (8-3-9), which ended Newcastle`s winning streak at five games. Alan Shearer scored for Newcastle.
At West Ham, Trevor Sinclair`s 20-yard shot put the hosts (6-7-7) ahead six minutes before halftime. Owen, though, came off the bench midway through the second half and netted his 16th goal of the season.
In Scotland, defending champion Glasgow Celtic improved to 19-1-1 by beating Dundee United 4-0 on goals by John Hartson, Stilian Petrov, Alan Thompson and Henrik Larsson. Second-place Glasgow Rangers (14-2-6) edged last-place St. Johnstone 1-0 on Dutch striker Michael Mols` goal two minutes after kickoff.
