Depleted Nigeria squad to begin training camp
LAGOS
Nigeria`s national squad was set to begin a training camp a day later than scheduled on Saturday with only seven of 30 invited players present.
But Robinson Okosun, team psychologist for Nigeria`s Super Eagles, said the turnout would not affect performances at next month`s African Nations Cup in Mali.
``We don`t envisage fears due to the late arrivals,`` Okosun said. ``Those invited are actively involved in their various club engagements.``
Julius Aghahowa, who plays for Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk, was the only player that Okosun would confirm had reported for the camp.
The Super Eagles will go to Mali with little preparation, having played only two international friendly matches since qualifying for the World Cup in August.
Nigeria have been drawn in the World Cup`s first-round ``Group of Death,`` along with Argentina, England and Sweden.
Okosun said the team would begin training on Saturday, adding that and hoped more players would arrive soon.
``The boys are around town, we will have the first training this evening,`` he said.
Journalists have been barred from the training camp at the Temperence Hotel camp in the city of Otta in Ogun State near Lagos.
