BBC award down to three
The votes have been counted and the BBC African Player of the Year award has now been reduced to a shortlist of three.
We received hundreds of emails and letters from visitors to the BBC`s African Football website and from listeners to the African Sport programmes "Fastrack" and "Friday Fastrack."
The idea is to leave the decision about who wins entirely to football fans.
There has been some criticism of the shortlist selected by Caf for the African Player of the Year.
Only a small number of officials choose who wins.
While two of your selections are supported by Caf, one does not tally.
Diouf was also a popular choice
After a day of counting, Ghana`s Samuel Kuffour, and Senegal`s Al Hadj Diouf have been shortlisted.
They are joined by Mohammed Kallon from Sierra Leone - a notable ommission from the Caf shortlist.
More than 40 players received votes and while your chosen footballer may not have made it through, you still have another chance to vote for those on the shortlist.
BBC Sport Online will now run a vote on the African Football website until the end of the year, the player who gets the most votes will be named BBC Player of the Year.
Exceptional
All three players on the shortlist have made outstanding contributions to the sport in the last year.
Kuffour helped his club side, Bayern Munich, to victory in the European Champions League and recently scored the only goal to give them victory in the World Club Championships in Japan.
The 25-year-old central defender is also a hot favourite to win the Caf African Player of the Year award.
Kallon has been having a superb season for his club Inter Milan in the tough Italian premier league Serie A.
The 22-year-old has scored eight goals so far this season making him the top African goal scorer in Italy.
Diouf, still only 20-years-old, has been performing consistently for his club side Lens who are currently top of the French first division.
More importantly the young striker played a huge role in his country`s qualification for next year`s World Cup in Korea and Japan.
It is the first time Senegal have qualified for the World Cup and many see them as the dark horses of the competition.
So cast your vote now online for the player you wish to see win the BBC Player of the Year.
