Weah resigns from Liberian FA
The relationship between the Liberian FA and George Weah has deteriorated further as the former international has resigned as vice president.
There has been no love lost between Weah and FA boss Edwin Snowe since the latter blocked the former World Player of the Year from contesting the post of association president at the recent elections held in Monrovia, which could have enabled the player fulfil his ambitions of gunning for electoral office at the Confederation of African Football.
Snowe stoked the fire of discord further by declaring that Weah`s vice presidential post, which he has held for five years, was purely honorary. The personality clash between the two has prompted the minister of sports Max Dennis to call on the Catholic Archbishop of Liberia, Monsignor Michael Francis, to intervene in the interest of Liberian football.
But in a letter sent to the football association, the former AC Milan striker, who doubles as technical director of the national team, said he was resigning the post to face "the Herculean task of preparing the national team for the African Nations Cup". He also said he wanted to concentrate on his activities with FIFA and wished his successor the best of luck.
African football followers fear the rift could ruin Liberia`s African Nations Cup chances in Mali. Weah has already criticised the FA after the Lone Stars failed to turn up last month in Egypt for a friendly game. But sports minister Dennis said there was no way Weah could be allowed to turn his back totally on Liberian football.
He said: "The nation needs Weah now more than ever before."
In a letter to the 35-year-old soccer icon, Archbishop Francis urged Weah, in the name of Liberian people, to continue to support Liberian football and the national team, having helped put the country on the world football map.
Liberia is one of 16 countries contesting Africa`s biggest soccer prize in Mali next month and they are in group A with hosts Mali, along with Nigeria and Algeria.
