Opopo dominate Botafogo, return to division one
Victoria United (Opopo) confirmed their superiority over provincial rivals Botafogo Buea on Saturday in Ngaoundere, pounding them 4-1 to qualify for division one. It was the 7th time both teams met in three years and it was Opopo’s 4th win, having drew the other three games.
This time Opopo’s victory enabled them not to play against Botafogo for at least another season as Opopo joined Bamboutos Mbouda and Asmy I Yaounde to qualify for division one at the end of Interpools 2001. Before the Opopo-Botafogo game, Bamboutos who emerged the most consistent team pounded Asmy I, 4-1 to second position, finishing champions of Interpools 2001. Asmy had travelled all night from Bertoua to Ngaoundere and fatigue and climate change forced them put up a child’s fight. Bamboutos returned to division one after 18 years in the cold, while Asmy were in their first promotion test in their four-year history. Opopo too returned to division one after two short stays, 1990-91 and 1996-97. To achieve the feat they had to pass through Botafogo. With two goals in each half Opopo were in the best shape. Their attack which had never scored more than two goals a game found the inspiration to punish Botafogo. Even Ncha Paul, their goal-getter in the South West league, who had a goal drought in Ngaoundere managed to find the back of the net.
It was Opopo’s second goal at the 45th minuet after Enow Ngachu got the curtain raiser at the 7th minute. Ncha in great form was also instrumental in the third goal when his cross from right to left was perfectly connected home by Djama at the 75th minute. For an accomplished objective, Opopo’s technical director Jean Pierre Sadi was very satisfied. He dedicated the victory to the Ngaoundere population for their massive support of Opopo. Ngaoundere has been a lucky town for Opopo. It was here that they last qualified for division one in 1996 and the local crowd has developed a liking for the name Opopo. The event ended with a fair play trophy for Rangers Bamenda and another to the top scorer, Raphael Makon of Bamboutor with 8 goals in eight games. FECAFOOT president Iya Mohamed congratulated all who made the event successful and hoped that the new division one teams will further raise the standard of Cameroon football.
