Canon relaunch Champions League campaign with home win
Martin Etonge
Two goals from striker Francis Oumar, one in each half of Canon Yaounde’s second CAF Champions League game enabled them harvest their first three points in the money spinning event.
Recovering from a 1-2 defeat to Esperance, Canon started forcefully against Atletico Aviaçao Angola in Douala and won 2-1.
Marcus Mokake was the engine in Canon as they took over control of the game from start. In less than two minutes from the beginning Oumar and Mokake had each lost a chance. Besides having two corner kicks there was already calls for a penalty in the first 12 minutes.
And a penalty was offered Canon three minutes later after skipper and defender, Joao Pereira came under pressure, panicked and caught the ball in the box. Oumar fired in the curtain raiser.
The Angolans fought back professional. Sidonio Inacio and Antonio Alves took control of the midfield, using it as their launching pad. As the turf got very heavy, the players opted for long over head passes.
The efforts of Aviaçao striker, Cablingulas Arsenio paid off in the 30 minute when he was pushed down in the box.. Antonio Alves stepped up and sent Canon’s goallie, Ndoe Mbarga diving the wrong way for the equaliser.
Robert Mba substituted Njdom Kouang of Canon shortly before the break, but could not help Canon gain ground. Fortunately for Canon Oumar was still strong enough to fight his way through defenders Pereira and Sergio Matosimua and slid in the ball for the second goal in the 57th minute.
Then Canon lost focus again. Mba and Oumar could not finish upthe huge work of Mokake. A few substitutions on both sides maintained the velocity of the game, but both clubs continued to blow off their chances.
Referee Aboubacar Sharaf’s final whistle was certainly a welcome relief for Canon as Aviaçao had put their backs on the wall during the dying moments.
Reason why Canon’s coach, Dieudonne Nke remarked at the end of the game that though they were satisfied with the win, they still had to work on the players’ concentration in the last 10 minutes.
