FECAFOOT organises youth football club finals
By Martin Etonge in Yaounde
For the first time in Cameroon football club champions from four zones will meet in Yaounde for two days, to play the finals of the three youth categories.
In it’s bid to re-launch youth football, FECAFOOT began organising provincial youth football championships last year.
The provincial champions in the U-15, U-17 and U-20 categories went through zonal finals. It’s the champions of these finals who will begin vying for the national tittle tomorrow at the annex grounds of the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium.
The three northern provinces constituted zone one, the Centre, East and South provinces formed zone two. While the West and North West provinces were zone three and the Littoral and South West provinces zone four.
At press time only zone two had announced its champions. Etoile Rouge Bertoua will represent the zone in the U-15 category, Lausanne Yaounde in the U-17 category and Vogt Athletics Club in the U-20 category.
According to FECAFOOT sources, the South province did not participate in the zonal finals because it failed to organise a proper provincial competition, though at the eleventh hour South provincial FECAFOOT officials tried to push through clubs.
FECAFTOOT will foot the lodging, transportation and feeding bills of the 12 clubs expected in Yaounde today. The event will start today with a discussion on youth football and ethics.
The national technical director, Robert Corfou is very concerned about the competition which will offer him a chance of detecting talents to eventually join the national squads of the different categories. He, alongside a medical team will also be checking the ages of the players.
Age cheats will not be considered in the talent detection process and the clubs may ultimately be disqualified from taking any titles won.
