Schäfer’s Contract On Track…
The German trainer of the Indomitable Lions may stay on,for now, no contract is established.
The head coach of the Indomitable Lions whose contract ended at the World Cup tournament in South Korea/Japan last month is likely to hang on with the squad. But for the moment no official engagement has been undertaken. In a telephone conversation the President of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT),Iya Mohamed disclosed that the dossier to extend Schäfer’s contract is on the right track and may be formalised in the days ahead .Mr Iya Mohamed sounded optimistic but intimated that a contract for the German trainer to continue with the Indomitable Lions is not yet a fait accompli.
In an interview granted Reuters in Berlin last Wednesday, the 52-year-old German who joined the technical staff of the Lions in September last year expressed his willingness to continue with the reigning African and Olympic champions if given the chance. Schäfer is quoted saying; "The President of the Federation has faxed me an offer… The Minister for Sport is also of that view. Now I am going to sign," he confirmed. Questioned on the possibility of moving to England division one side, Brighton, Schaefer explained that he is so close to the Cameroonians and would want to remain with them. If the two-year-contract is finally established, then, Schäfer will have the responsibility to reshape the Indomitable Lions and rebuild shattering fame ignited by the dismal performance of the squad in the just ended World Cup competition.
Talking to the German sports news agency (SID), Schäfer hopes for a long stay with the Lions. As he puts it, "if we have a good show at the Nations’ Cup 2004 in Tunisia, I will keep up my work until the 2006 World Cup." Mr Winfried Schäfer is expected in Cameroon to formalise the two-year-contract every thing being equal.
