Stoke striker Pericard jailed for lying
LONDON, Stoke City striker Vincent Pericard has been jailed for trying to avoid a speeding offence by claiming his stepfather was behind the wheel.
The 24-year-old Frenchman admitted perverting the course of justice at Plymouth Crown Court and received a four-month sentence, English Championship club Stoke said on their Web site (www.stokecityfc.premiumtv.co.uk.
Pericard was on loan from Premier League Portsmouth to Championship side Plymouth Argyle at the time he was caught driving a Mercedes CLK 500 at 103 mph (166 kph) en route to a training session in March 2006.
The Cameroon-born player filled in a form sent to him by police saying that the driver had been his stepfather who lives in France.
However, the ruse went wrong when police contacted his stepfather and heard he had not been in Britain since 2003.
After ignoring several subsequent letters from the police, Pericard received one informing him that the picture of the car speeding had been taken from the front and revealed him to be the driver.
On Dec. 6 last year, the player sent a prepared statement to police in which he said he had made a mistake and apologised for any inconvenience. However, he was later arrested.
Pericard, who had a spell with Italian giants Juventus, was also disqualified from driving for 12 months.
Stoke promised to stand by the player, who they signed during the 2006 close season.
