D1 : Battle for Leadership Intensifies
Union, Cotonsport and Mount Cameroon are trying to out pace one another.
As the elite championship entered the second and final phase, the battle for the leadership or quitting the relegation zone is intensifying by the day. At the top of the league table, three teams, Union, Cotonsport and Mount Cameroon are bracket with 40 points each after 20 days of play and only separated by goal difference. Meanwhile at the bottom of the chart, the battle is fiercer given that six teams will have to be relegated to the second division at the end of the season. For now, those still in the relegation zone are Sable of Batie, AS Cetef, federal of Noun, Sahel Maroua and CPS of Bertoua.
Given the stakes of the competition the matches to watch on the 21st day of play next Wednesday July 11, are league title contender, Cotonsport versus Sable of Batie which has embarked on a journey out of the relegation zone ever since they moved their headquarters from Batie to Douala. Also on the look out will be the encounter between current league leaders, Union and bottom placed Federal of Noun. However, the greatest challenge to be faced by a contender for the league title will be that of Mount Cameroon when they play host to Foudre Akonolinga on the 5th position.
Tonnerre will be trying to forget the humiliating defeat suffered at home in the hands of Sable Batie on the 20th day of play when the clash with Federal in Yaounde. The defeat irritated club president, Essomba Eyenga to the point that he promised dismissing the coach and some players, should Tonnerre concede another defeat within the next five playing days. The expectation therefore will be to see whether Tonnerre will succeed in breaking the chain of defeats that has seen it drop from the first to the 7th position on the classification table.
Meanwhile, in an advanced day 21 match played last Sunday July 1, Esperance edged AS Cetef 2-1.
