Fifa confirms Kingston ban
Fifa has confirmed that Ghana midfielder Laryea Kingston will not be eligible to play at the World Cup finals in Germany.
The Locomotiv Moscow player received a four-match suspension after he was expelled from Ghana`s group match during the last African Cup of Nations.
A statement made by world football`s governing body to BBC Sport on Thursday stated Laryea must serve the ban imposed by the Confederation of African Football, Caf.
"We can confirm that the Fifa disciplinary department has formally informed the Ghana Football Association that the remaining un-served match suspensions of Laryea Kingston will indeed be carried over to Ghana`s subsequent official matches in a competition organised by Fifa, in this case, the 2006 Fifa World Cup," the statement said.
It quoted Article 39, paragraph 2 of the Fifa disciplinary code, which says players unable to complete a suspension imposed during "confederation competitions for representative teams are carried over to the representative team`s subsequent official match in a competition organised by Fifa."
But this regulation appears to conflict with article 28.8 of Caf`s Nations Cup regulations which state:
"The suspension of a player for more than one match shall be applicable to the matches of this competition (Cup of Nations) or extended to the matches of any other competition organised by Caf and involving the senior representative national teams."
Laryea had already served one of the four-match bans by missing Ghana`s final group game against Zimbabwe at the tournament in Egypt.
He will now miss all of Ghana`s group games at the World Cup and can only play for the Black Stars if they qualify for the second round.
There had been uncertainty about Laryea`s status after former Black Stars captain Abedi Pele met with Fifa officials in Zurich this week to discuss the matter.
Meanwhile, Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi says they will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Laryea`s behalf.
"We are in the process of compiling our case so we can make a strong representation to the court," Nyantakyi told BBC Sport on Thursday.
