Alexandria Stadium: Battle Ground for Group C Teams
The stadium has also been selected to host one of the quarterfinals matches.
Alexandria, the second largest city in Egypt, has the oldest football stadium in the land of the pharaohs. The stadium was built at the beginning of the 20th century and hosted first round matches of the 1986 African Cup of Nations. With a seating capacity for 22,000 fans, the Alexandria stadium will host the matches of most West African teams pooled in Group A. The stadium has also been selected to host one of the quarterfinals matches.
Situated some 217km from the capital city, Cairo, Alexandria is known as the ‘pearl of the Mediterranean’ and is also the home ground of the most popular club in Alexandria, Al Itihad. Alexandria is not only famous because of its age long history but also because it has two venues for the competition.
The Harras El-Hedoud stadium is a brand new stadium in Alexandria’s Al-Max district, one of the busiest places in the city. The Harras El-Hedoud stadium has a seating capacity for 28,500 spectators and it is the home ground of the Border Guard military team. The distance to Cairo International airport is 100km. It is on this stadium that teams of Group C (Tunisia, Zambia, South Africa and Guinea) will play their first round matches.
