CAN Volleyball: Cameroon Secures Fifth Position
Nigeria will face Egypt in the final today.
The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon yesterday upset Morocco 3-0 sets in the play-off for fifth place in the ongoing African Cup of Nations women’s volleyball tournament at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium in Abuja. The Moroccans, who were confident of a victory against Cameroon, had to settle for the sixth place after going down in sets of 20-25, 12-25, and 20-25 in an encounter that lasted 1h 10minutes.
As if in revenge, the Cameroonians showed a great mastery of the sport, dominating the whole encounter. The Cameroonians fought had for the victory with with powerful spikes from Messina Ondoa, Ambassa, Ngo Nkot, Ambatta Carole, etc. The second set was won easily but the Moroccans put up a strong fight in the third set but were overcome by the hard hits of the Cameroonians. Cameroon took the set 25-20.
Earlier, Botswana who finished bottom in pool A, outplayed Côte d’Ivoire, the bottom team in pool B, 3-0 sets, to finish seventh in the medal table. Cote d’Ivoire finished eight in the overall classification. In the semi-final matches played on Monday, Kenya beat Tunisia 3-2 sets while Nigeria beat cup holders, Egypt 3-1 sets. Nigeria will face Kenya in the final today at 4:00pm. At press time yesterday, the third and fourth place play-off between Tunisia and Egypt was underway.
According to Coach Yende Lavoisier, what he has learnt from this tournament is that the team has to go back and work much harder. "A fifth place for Cameroon means that much still needs to be done if we have to catch up with other countries," he said. Adding that the players are good but what he intends doing after this is to revise his strategy in order to improve on the performance of the team.
