Schalke 04 reprieve striker Mpenza
GELSENKIRCHEN,
Bundesliga runners-up Schalke 04 have recalled striker Emile Mpenza to the fold after suspending the Belgian international earlier in the week for lack of commitment, Schalke general manager Rudi Aussauer said Thursday.
The Ruhr club imposed the open-ended ban on the eve of their Champions League match at Real Mallorca last Monday and Mpenza flew back to Germany in disgrace.
But in the wake of the German sides 4-0 hammering of the Spaniards all has been forgiven for 23-year-old Mpenza, who last year scored 35 goals in the German championship.
"The business at Mallorca has been sorted. There won`t be a fine but part of his profits will be frozen," said Assauer.
"I hope he understood this warning. If he continues like that he`ll finish up in the gutter."
A relieved Mpenza said: "Everything is sorted out. It was just a misunderstanding. I`ll finish my contract with Schalke."
The striker is suffering from an inflammation of the lymphatic system in his groin and has been one of Schalke`s poorest performers so far this season. Schalke are seventh in the league 10 points behind leaders Kaiserslautern following a 3-0 loss to VfB Stuttgart on Saturday.
Mpenza joined Schalke at the beginning of 2000 for a club record of 8.7 million euros (7.9 million dollars).
Schalke, UEFA Cup winners in 1997, are last in Champions League Group C with three points from three matches.
