Egypt fans damage 2010 bid
The recriminations following Egypt`s thrashing at the hands of Denmark are continuing, with Egyptian FA officials claiming the behaviour of fans will damage their chances of hosting the World Cup in 2010.
A section of the crowd pelted the pitch with stones in the final stages of the game, which the Egyptians lost 4-1.
"What happened in Cairo stadium was a bad image, which may affect our chances of hosting such a major event," one EFA official stated.
National team coach Mohsen Saleh added his criticism.
"What happened on Wednesday was a disgrace. I`m not talking about the result, but the fans` attitude".
Saleh, who is under great pressure after a series of poor results, said the supporters had made the team`s job more difficult.
"We were down to ten men, which put my players under a lot of stress," he said. Even if they were able to handle the pressure of the Danish team, they would have never been able to handle the pressure from their own fans".
Despite criticism of the referee and the coach, the national media heavily condemned the fans.
One paper made a comparison with England`s 3-1 loss to Australia, and asked why it was that English fans did not misbehave.
