Senegal put Liverpool top
Senegal midfielder Salif Diao scored the only goal, his second for his new club, and put Liverpool top of the Premiership in a tight encounter at Leeds United.
The 25-year-old combined with international team-mate El Hadj Diouf to slot home in the second half as a much-changed Liverpool side took on the Elland Road outfit.
Diao`s goal came on 65 minutes as he flicked home a low, near-post cross from Diouf who had been fed by a throughball supplied by Germany`s Dietmar Hamann.
The ex-Lens star was in a side shorn of regulars Heskey, Henchoz, Xavier, Gerrard and Michael Owen, all of whom are either injured, or in Owen`s case, rested.
Leeds had began the game off the back of a five match losing streak and started brightly.
However Liverpool soon imposed themselves on the play which led to Leeds players Eirik Bakke and Lee Bowyer showing their fustration with rash challenges.
Near the end, Australian international, Harry Kewell had a chance to salvage a point for his beleagured side after Reds defender Sami Hyypia lost control of the ball in the area.
With the goal at his mercy however, Kewell shot wide.
Gerrard Houllier`s side now sit atop the table, one point ahead of Arsenal who are due to play at Everton later on Saturday.
