Akono remains confident
Despite a 4-1 defeat to Algeria, Chad coach Jean Paul Akono said his team remains in the race to qualify for the 2004 Nations Cup.
The Cameroonian coach steered his country to the Olympic gold medal in 2000 and reckons he can spring another surprise with his new team.
"It [Nations Cup qualification] is not over yet.
"We still have a good chance of qualifying. We were not disgraced by Algeria and I saw a lot of positive things from my young team," Akono said.
Although Algeria top group 12 with six points from two matches, Akono believes his team will bounce back.
Chad have never qualified for the finals of the African Nations Cup.
"There are still a few more games to play and we have not given up hopes on qualification.
"We still lack a bit of experience at the moment, but we will continue to work very hard.
"By the time we face Namibia in March, we should have improved well enough to advance," Akono said.
