Eleven Athletes to Represent Cameroon in Mauritius
The 15th edition of the senior African Athletics Championship takes place from August 9 to 13.
As the count down to the 15th edition of the senior African Athletics Championship narrows, preparations have reached fever pitch in the country. The competition will take place from August 9 to 13 at the Germain-Comarmond stadium in Bambous in the Mauritius Island. Some 30 delegations are expected to participate in the competition. The cream of the African athletes will show to the world just what they can do in athletics.
Ahead of this important event, the Cameroon Athletics Federation has selected 11 athletes who will the country’s colours in the Mauritius Islands. The athletes were selected during the fifth and last playing day of the national championship last weekend in Yaounde. But, among the 11 athletes selected, one might not make the trip to the Mauritius Island. Commonwealth bronze medallist, and Cameroon’s hope for medal in the 100m and 200m events, Delphine Atangana, is indisposed. She had an injury in the right leg during the recent Paris meeting which keeps her off track for close to four weeks.
According to the Secretary General of the Cameroon Athletics Federation, Bonane Emmanuel, the national team coach was expected to select a possible replacement for Delphine yesterday. This not withstanding, federation officials have asked her to return home and be administered treatment by the team doctor with the hope that she might recover before departure. "We still maintain her name in the list while waiting to see if there will be some improvement," he said.
Four professionals and six local athletes make up the Cameroonian team that will travel to Mauritius. Mani Leonie is a sure candidate for medals in the 100m and 200m events. Carole Kaboud holds the best record for Cameroon in the 400m hurdles (57") and she is the vice champion of Africa in that discipline. She will compete in the ladies 100m hurdles and the relay events. The national team captain is likely to win a medal in the competition.
Hugo Mamba holds national record for triple jump (16m44) and is equally a medal hopeful for Cameroon. Monique Ngo Ngoue equally has the best performance in shot put in the sub region (15m14). National high jump record man, Serge Foungtcho a Ndem, whose record stands at 2m18 also has chances of mounting the podium as well as the 20,000m walk national champion, Ngnintedem Gabriel.
The President of the Cameroon Athletics Federation, Ange Sama, said Cameroon has talented athletes who can make the country proud in Mauritius. It is the wish of the President of the Cameroon Athletics Federation that government’s financial assistance should not be delayed to enable the delegation arrive in the Mauritius Island on time. The delegation is expected to be in Mauritius on August 7, 2006
This year’s African championship will be graced by the presence of former African and world champions such as double Athens Olympics champion, Morroco’s Hicham El-Guerrouj, Ethiopia’s legend Haile Gebrselassie and the gentleman of African athletics, Namibia’s Frankie Fredericks.
