Canon and Mount Cameroon make good start in continental games
Martin Etonge
It was a nice day for Cameroon fans who had two of their three clubs involved in this year’s CAF club competitions winning their first round first leg games at home.
Only Coton Sport Garoua may have spoiled the day after recording a 0-0 draw with Maranatha Togo in the CAF Cup competition. The result created doubts as to their capacity to take the away game and qualify for the next round.
Playing in Douala, Mount Cameroon recorded a goal in each half to edge Akonangui of Equatorial Guinea 2-0 in Cup Winners’ Cup. Play maker Valentine Atem returned to shape to propel Mount Cameroon to victory.
After serving Elvis Mokake for the opener, he caused the penalty that resulted to the second goal. Before dismissing rumours that he will be moving to Japan for trials this week.
But the sweetest of the wins happened in Yaounde where Canon pounded El Merrikh Sudan 5-0 in the Champions league.
After holding down Canon in the first half, El Merrikh’s nine-men defence built around Amir Mohamed gave way in the second half. And the goals started flowing in as early as the 46th minutes when Edoa Georges headed in a corner kick.
Canon had made no use of ten corner kicks in the first half. That was not going to be the case in the second half. Out of the five corners obtained, three ended up as goals.
In the confusion of another corner kick 11 minutes after Edoa’s goal, Marcus Mokake pushed the ball in the right lower part of goalkeeper Baha Mohamed’s net for the second goal. Baha’s defence had failed to clear properly.
Ngon A Djam headed in yet another corner kick six minutes later. Before François Dikoume made it four nil in the 75th minute. With 3 minutes to go Mochare Daniel sealed the deal a 40-metre shoot that left substitute goalkeeper Ammar Makki helpless.
In spite of the heavy defeat, Canon’s coach Pierre Ndjili had some nice words for El Merrikh players. “They are a good side. We should not forget that they arrived Yaounde less that 24 hours to the game and must have been tired. You realised how difficult it was for us to get the goals during the first half “.
