Lethal Battle For Bottom Teams
Despite the victories of bottom-placed teams, the relegation race gets tougher.
The 28th playing day of the current championship last Wednesday saw all teams on the danger zone winning their matches in the struggle to avert relegation. The Wednesday victories of Espérance, Kumbo Strikers, Victoria United and ASMY 1er simply carried forward their doom’s day. As the relegation race heightens, major upsets continue to be created by these teams that are fighting for survival. It becomes even more difficult to ascertain the team that will get into division two as the days go by. With the league’s underdogs daring to close the season on the honour roll, some football pundits accuse them of match-fixing. It is difficult, if not, impossible to apportion pre-match fixing to any team. Whether back door dealings had anything to do with last Wednesday victories got by the badly placed teams, it is but logical that as birds of the same plumage, they keep flocking together. Canon’s draw against Mount Cameroon on this day widens the gap between this league leader and runners —up Coton Sport and Bamboutos. The runners-up stand at 49 points each and winning their last two matches becomes the only option in the bid to topple Canon. Canon on the 29th playing day will clash with Unisport in Yaounde. A victory in this encounter will be decisive for the title contender.
This is made more complex by the fact that, Canon’s last match will be in Garoua against Coton Sport whose ambition is equally to grab the title. Bamboutos, keeping an eye on the crown cannot be discarded. It remains a game of no error for the first three clubs on the upper rung of the league table. If statistics are ethical guides as they pose to be, then, Canon is the title’s favourite at least for the moment. How well Canon will end the season can largely depend too on how well they manage the stakes. The season stands to be one of keen competition with nothing left to chance from the top to the bottom. The 29th playing day comes up next week due to the return leg matches of the cup of Cameroon billed for this week-end.
