CAF changes from designation to playoffs
Contrary to the past years where the Confederation of African Football (CAF) designated African representatives at the World Club Championship (CWC), winners of this year`s African Champions League will have a chance to represent Africa after play-offs.
The CAF`s (Confederation of African Football) executive committee, meeting last Saturday in Mali ahead of Saturday`s African Nations Cup finals draw, decided on Africa`s two representatives for the 2003 CWC.
Those going through would be the winners of the 2002 Champions League and the victors of a playoff between this year`s Champions League winners and the runners-up in next year`s final.
The decision is a change in policy for CAF, who had previously designated the winners of the Champions League and the African Cup Winners Cup to represent the continent at the CWC.
Officials also said that with world body FIFA planning to increase the CWC field to 16 teams, it was likely the play-off losers would face another play-off against an Asian side for a possible third berth for Africa.
Hearts of Oak of Ghana and Egypt`s Zamalek were due to play in the second CWC in Spain this year, but the event was cancelled in the wake of the bankruptcy of FIFA`s marketing partners ISL.
The host nation for the 2003 event has yet to be determined but is likely to be either Spain or England. Corinthians of Brazil won the inaugural championship in Brazil last year.
