Nyemb’s hat trick sparks Wingate’s 4-2 win over the Coker College Cobras
Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University junior forward Junior Nyemb (Douala, Cameroon) scored three goals to lead the Bulldog men’s soccer team past the Cobras of Coker College Wednesday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field. Wingate improves to 2-1 overall, the Cobras fall to 1-1-1 overall.
Nyemb (pronounced “yem”) got the Bulldogs on the board 13:25 into the first half, heading a cross from freshman midfielder Felippe Imperatriz (Sao Paulo, Brazil) into the right corner of the net for his first goal of the year. The two-time All-SAC selection got on the board again five minutes later, taking a cross from freshman midfielder Fabricio Barancoski (Sao Paulo, Brazil) for his second goal of the half.
Nyemb completed his hat trick 3:46 into the second half, scoring from inside the box with the assist coming from sophomore midfielder Adam Cunningham (Gastonia, N.C.) to give Wingate a 3-0 lead. Nyemb has two career hat tricks, as the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® candidate single-handedly lifted the Bulldogs over Davis & Elkins (W.Va.) College 3-2 on Sept. 3, 2007.
Despite Nyemb’s explosion, the Cobras would not go away. The visitors tallied two goals in the next 20 minutes to cut the lead to one. Coker junior midfielder Mike Crook (Bradenton, Fla.) struck first at the 55:27 mark, taking a feed from sophomore forward Daniel Shrizad (Orlando, Fla.) right in front of the net to make it 3-1. Shrizad found the back of the net 12 minutes later to make it 3-2 with less than 23 minutes remaining in the contest.
Imperatriz gave the Bulldogs some breathing room at the 86:15 mark, netting his first goal of the season on a feed from freshman forward Sandre’ Wilson (Mandeville, Jamaica). Wingate held a 20-10 advantage in shots, including a 12-5 edge in shots on goal.
Bulldog sophomore goalkeeper Joey Calandra (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) collected three saves for the hosts. Senior goalkeeper Joel Tyson (Irmo, S.C.) racked up eight saves for the Cobras. Wingate held an 11-4 advantage in corner kicks on the afternoon.
The Bulldogs return to action Friday, when they host St. Andrews Presbyterian College at 5 p.m. The Cobras return to action Saturday, when they host Lander at 4 p.m.
