Liberia to strike again
Liberia`s players are threatening to leave Mali 2002 unless payments of $6,500 are made.
The payments are owed them by the Liberian Football Association, as a bonus for qualifying for the Nations Cup for only the second time in the country`s history.
Now captain Kelvin Sebwe has said on Liberian radio that unless that money is paid the players will simply leave Mali and fly back to their clubs.
But Liberia`s Minister for Information says there is no money to give them, and that if the players do leave Mali that is their choice.
The team originally threatened to boycott the Nations Cup before it even began, asking for $15,000.
Player-coach George Weah has acknowledged that the team was "very very close" to not attending the tournament at all.
The FA said it could only afford $6,500, but after last-minute appeals from players` relatives and friends the Lone Stars accepted this amount.
After that happened, Liberia FA chief Edwin Snowe said he was optimistic that "all of the issues which hampered our preparations are over."
It now appears that may have been a rather exaggerated claim.
