Day Two: Chelsea extend winning streak
Goals from Geremi and Didier Drogba helped Chelsea to their fifth win in a row as they beat Sunderland 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Elsewhere in the Premiership, a late Joey Barton goal salvaged Manchester City a 1-1 draw against Manchester United , while Spurs drew 0-0 at home to Liverpool.
Chelsea were frustrated by Sunderland in a dull first half at Stamford Bridge but broke the deadlock after 54 minutes when Cameroon midfielder Geremi took advantage of a poor throw by Sunderland keeper Mike Pollitt to score.
The champions dominated the rest of the match and doubled their advantage when striker Didier Drogba rose at the far post to head home a terrific cross by fellow substitute Damien Duff.
"I am very happy to win this match and I am very happy to have such strength on the bench," Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho told Sky Sports.
It was Sunderland`s fifth defeat of the season and 20th Premier League loss in a row.
United dominated the Manchester derby and went ahead on the stroke of halftime when Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy lashed home the rebound after his initial shot was well saved by City keeper David James.
City defended well and snatched a draw to maintain their unbeaten start to the season when midfielder Joey Barton stabbed the ball home from close range 14 minutes from time.
OWEN GIVEN FEW CHANCES TO SHINE
Owen had few chances to shine at St James` Park and Newcastle fell behind to an early goal by Fulham`s American striker Brian McBride.
The home side finally scored their first goal of the season, however, when midfielder Charles N`Zogbia curled home a delightful 20-metre free kick 12 minutes from time.
Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool drew 0-0 in an entertaining match at White Hart Lane, Wigan Athletic won 2-1 in an early relegation battle at West Bromwich Albion and Everton striker Duncan Ferguson headed an own goal to give Portsmouth a 1-0 victory at Goodison Park.
Arsenal travel to Middlesbrough later on Saturday, Bolton Wanderers face Blackburn Rovers on Sunday and West Ham United meet Aston Villa on Monday.
