Liberians reach agreement on bonuses and will play: Weah
BINGERVILLE, Ivory Coast
Liberia coach George Weah said here on Wednesday his players would take part in the African Nations Cup after agreeing to accept lower bonuses than they were originally demanding.
The players had threatened to drop out of the tournament, in which they play the opening match against host nation Mali on Saturday, unless they received bonuses of 15,000 dollars (16,800 euros) and gave their federation 24 hours to come up with the cash.
But former World Footballer of the Year Weah said the players had accepted almost half that sum after a meeting on Tuesday with Liberian Football Federation chief Edwin Snowe.
"The players have finally accepted the federation`s offer, made in agreement with the government, to pay them 6,500 dollars and resumed training today," he said.
The Liberians were due to leave their training camp in the Ivory Coast and fly to Mali later Wednesday.
