Volleyball: Cameroon Trounce Benin
The Armed Forces and Police team registered their first victory yesterday in the ongoing 24th African Clubs Champions Cup Competition in Cotonou, Benin.
The 24th edition of the African Volleyball Club Champions Cup men’s competition entered its third playing day yesterday at the Benin Ultramodern Sports Complex in Cotonou. Cameroon’s flag bearers in the competition, FAP volleyball club of Yaounde, came out of slumber and beat University of Agbome Calavi (UAC) of Benin 3-0 sets (25-11, 25-18, 25-11) in their second match. The victory was the first to be registered by FAP after loosing to Sfaxien of Tunisia 0-3 (22-25, 17-25, 23-25) in their first outing on Monday. It was an encounter that saw domination by FAP over the inexperienced UAC. The Beninois opened scores in the first minute but FAP equalised shortly after. They led the set scoring eight points in the first four minutes, giving way for the first official technical time out.
The Cameroonians led by hard hitters, Abbas Maloum, Mballa, and Ndaki Yves Marcel, continued to lead the set with skipper Samou Robert capitalising on the UAC defence. The UAC Beninois put up a strong resistance in the second and third set but the Cameroonians continued tormenting them with hard spikes from Omgba Achilles, Nyambe Eric, Ndongo Gael, etc. It took the Cameroonians 58 minutes to crush the Beninois.
Efforts by the Beninois to catch up with their adversaries were futile as they could not stand the prowess of the Cameroonians. The UAC team looked composed but they lacked a strong back court reception. This gave the Cameroonians an edge over the Beninois. In the other match played in pool A, Kenya Commercial Bank beat Club Industriel of Guinea 3-0 sets.
In the other matches played in pool A on Monday, Kenya Commercial Bank beat UAC of Benin 3-0 sets. In pool B, Africa Sport outplayed Postel Benin 3-1, GSK lost to the University of Rwanda 0-3, and Inter club of Congo beat Mbongo Sport of DR Congo 3-0. FAP will play their next match today against CIK of Guinea as from 9:00am. Their last pool match has been scheduled for tomorrow at 7:00pm. According to coach Batoum, the players have improved on their performances. He said the team will work hard to correct all the mistakes of the first match in order to meet their objective.
