It will be the 4th and second to the last training camp before the beginning of the Games next September 25.
After two training camps in Akono and one at the FECAFOOT technical centre in Odja, the national selection to defend Cameroon’s colours at the 6th edition of the Francophonie Games in Lebanon, have been called to camp again in Yaounde for the fourth time. The training camp which will run from September 19 to 31 will be followed by another training camp in Qatar before they leave for Beirut. 23 players will be retained by team coach, Etienne Sonkeng, after the training session in Yaounde, who will be joined by 5 professional players for the training session in Qatar scheduled to begin on September 19. The 6th Francophonie Games will take place in Beirut- Lebanon from September 27 to October 6, 2009.
Cameroon will be seeking to do better than in 2005 in Niamey-Niger when the junior lions emerged overall 5th in the football competition. The best performance of Cameroon in the Francophonie Games was in 2001 in Madagascar when the junior lions won the bronze medal in football. This year, there will be 12 teams involved in the football competition divided into three groups. Cameroon was pulled in Group C alongside Cote d`Ivoire, Burkina Faso and host country, Lebanon. Group A comprises Senegal, Egypt, Rwanda and Mali. Group B is made up of France, Morocco, Congo and Canada.
The Francophonie Games are organised once every four years, one year after the Olympic Games. The games was created during the second Head of State and government summit in 1987 with the intention to foster friendship among youth from countries using French as official language and partly as counter weight to the Commonwealth Games. It is a combination of artistic and sporting events including athletics, basketball, boxing, judo, table tennis, wrestling and football for the sporting events. Cultural events comprise song, fairy tale, traditional dance, poetry, painting, photography and sculpture. It is open to athletes and artists of the 55 member nations, 2 associate member nations and 13 observer nations of the Francophonie. Participation has so far varied between 1,700 and 3,000 athletes and artists.
