Indomitable Lionesses Sharpen Claws
The female national football team yesterday intensified training for the 5th African Women’s championship with a test match in Yaounde.
As part of their preparation for the 5th African Women Championship that begins in Nigeria on Saturday, October 28th, 2006, the female national football squad, the Indomitable Lionesses had a training match yesterday in Yaounde. They faced the junior men’s team of Club Ahtletico of Yaounde. Although the Lionesses were beaten 0 — 2, the hundreds of spectators who turned up to watch the match cheered captain Anong Bernadette and her mates for their vigour, stamina and endurance. The Lionesses were unanimous that they could have done better had the conditions been different. "Most of us were tired because of the journey from Akono (60 kilometres on bad road), else we could have done better", Manie Christine of Canon Yaounde said.
Yesterday’s match was an occasion for coach, Charles Kamdem to assess the physical and tactical prowess of his squad, as well as fine tune his strategy. "I am very confident because I have quality players at my disposal. True, we were beaten. But we were also playing without some of our key players", he said. Noticeably absent during yesterday’s training match were Ngono Madeleine who plays for AS Saint Etienne, France. She was expected in the country last night. Also absent was Ngo Ndoumbouk Marlyse of Lorema Yaounde who is recovering from a knee sprain. According to the medical doctor of the squad, Dr Eboko, Ngo Ndoumbouk is on a medical rest. The Kinetherapist, Rose Rene Nanga, is optimistic that with the daily massage, all will be well by tomorrow.
Present at the stadium to cheer the girls was the president of the FECAFOOT commission for feminine football, Mrs Rose Nyobe. She enjoined Captain Anong Bernadette and her mates to remain serene and focused. "I congratulate you for what you have been doing to project feminine football in Cameroon. The entire nation is looking at us. The task ahead is huge but I am sure all will be well", she said.
The Lionesses leave Cameroon for Nigeria on Thursday. Cameroon will play in Group B alongside RD Congo, Mali and Ghana.
