Togo Fires National Team Coach
The Hawks are among the five African representatives at the World Cup.
Nigerian born Stephen Keshi has been dismissed as the head coach of the Hawks of Togo by the Togolese Football Federation (FTF). This comes on the heels of the poor results registered by the team at the just ended African Cup of Nations in Cairo, Egypt. The TFF`s decision was announced during a television programme in Lome last Monday. German coach, Otto Pfister, and Bora Milutinovic, the Serbian that managed Nigeria at the 1998 World Cup finals, are among the candidates earmarked to replace Keshi. Pfister, who managed Ghana at the 1992 Nations Cup finals, is said to have already began contact with the Togolese Football Federation officials. Keshi is alleged to have been sacked due to differences he had with key players of the national team. His recent row with Sheyi Adebayor during the African Cup of Nations had caused some of the Togolese Football federation to turn against him. Keshi, the former Super Eagles captain, achieved the unprecedented feat of earning Togo a ticket to the World Cup finals, ahead of Senegal and Zambia.
The new coach will have as task to remobilise the team and detect new talents for the Hawks among Togolese players who are playing in national championships in Togo and abroad. Stephen Kehsi took over as coach of the Hawks from Brazilian, Antonio Dumas who was highly criticised for poor results, arrogance, and his policy of bringing Brazilian footballers to play in the Togolese national team. At 43, Stephen Kehsi has succeeded in making the national team of Togo a determined and dynamic team. He captained the Super Eagles in the 1994 World Cup in the United States. Stephen Keshi has played in Europe in the prestigious club Anderlecht and Racing club of Strasbourg in France. After his professional football career he opted to study coaching in the Netherlands. During the 2002 Cup of Nations in Mali, Kehsi was the assistant coach of the Super Eagles with Shuaibou Amodu as head coach. Togo, Angola, Tunisia, Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire will represent Africa at the World Cup in Germany next June.
