Sports Medicine: Practitioners Delve on Techniques
Some 17 medical doctors and kinetherapists are taking part in a seminar for sports medicine in Yaounde.
Sports men and women are exposed to injuries and diseases which require the advise of medical specialists. However, most of the doctors who work with national teams or clubs lack adequate training in giving specific advice on problems related to the practice of sports. It is for this reason that a five-day refresher course on the dynamics of sports medicine is underway in Yaounde. Organised by the National Olympic and Sports Committee of Cameroon, the workshop brings together some 17 medical practitioners specialised in sports medicine and physiotherapy. The seminar comes up after the first edition in 2003 which was under the supervision of the international Olympic Committee. This time the workshop is being led by Cameroonian specialists.
For five days, the participants will delve into techniques such as Physical fitness, physical adaptation, how to treat trauma, mysticism and occult beliefs in sports, feeding, how to issue medical certificates, among others. Participants will receive practical lessons on the last day.
Opening the workshop, the Vice President of the National Olympic and Sports Committee, François Xavier Darwe, said that the workshop is a good moment to upgrade skills of sports doctors. He said sports doctors must be well informed of athletes health problems. Knowledge of the biomechanics, physiology of muscular exercise, feeding, risks inherent in training and competition depending on the environment, sports equipments and their security is important.
He said, the wish of the National Olympic Committee is that such workshops could add more in the practice of the different actors. He called on the participants to ensure that at the end of the workshop, the Cameroon Association of Sport Medicine will be more functional and will serve as a training centre for sports medicine. He equally called on them to benefit from the experience they will learn form the specialists. The seminar ends on tomorrow.
