Table Tennis: 14 Million Financial Assistance
Government’s assistance to the federation will facilitate World Cup participation.
The Cameroon Table Tennis Federation last Friday received financial assistance from government. The Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Philippe Mbarga Mboa, handed over the sum of CAF 14,180,000 to the officials of the Cameroon Table Tennis Federation in his cabinet. The financial assistance is in view of Cameroon’s participation in the upcoming female individual World Cup Table Tennis competition which will take place in China from December 13 to 15. Present at the ceremony were officials of the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education and officials of the Table tennis federation.
Speaking during the brief ceremony, the Minister said the aid is to support and encourage the federation for the work they are doing in the development of sports in the country. He used the occasion to remind federations to of their autonomy instituted by government. He called on the officials of the Table tennis federation to work hand in gloves to ensure that Cameroon wins more medals in the discipline.
The President of the federation, Baguega Assobo, thanked the government the for support. Cameroon will be represented at the World Cup by one athlete, Fomoum Victorine, who is the best athlete in Cameroon. Cameroon qualified for the World Cup during the African Cup of Nations in Brazzaville. Fomoum Victorine will not only represent Cameroon, but Africa as a whole in the competition. She is among the best eight athletes in the world. According to Baguega Assobo, the season has been a rich one beginning with the African Cup of Nations in Brazzaville. Eight athletes represented the country in that competition. Seven national competitions were organised nation wide.
The 2005 season for table tennis will end with the finals of the national championship which will take place in Yaounde on November 26. In the international scene, Cameroon will take part in a series of international competitions: the Central African championship, the African Championship, World Cup teams competition and most probably the Commonwealth Games.
