Hamburg, Germany (Sports Network) - Cameroon international defender Timothee Atouba joined Bundesliga club Hamburg and signed a four-year contract extension that will keep him at the German club until 2009.
Hamburg reached an agreement with English Premier League side Tottenham for the 23-year-old left-back. The transfer fee was not disclosed, but is believed to be somewhere in the region of $2.5 million.
"Hamburg is a special and big club, and I look forward to playing in the Bundesliga," Atouba explained.
Atouba played in 18 Premier League games last season for Tottenham. But he was unable to earn a regular starting spot under coach Martin Jol, and pleaded for the move to Hamburg.
"He was our top candidate from the start and we are very happy to finalize the transfer," Hamburg sporting director Dietmar Beiersdorfer said.
Atouba spent just one season with Spurs. He arrived in England in the summer of 2004 from Swiss club Basel, where he played at the previous two seasons. His move to Hamburg was abetted by former Cameroon national team coach, German Winfried Schafer, who thought Atouba would be a good fit with the club.
Hamburg has strengthened its team this offseason with three summer signings. Atouba joins Rafael van der Vaart and Guy Demel as newcomers to the squad.
