DI Football: Poor Spectacle in Yaounde
Tonnerre and PWD failed to impress their fans yesterday in Yaounde.
The 19th playing day of the National Division I Championship took place yesterday with some eight matches played through out the national territory. The duel in Yaounde pitted two teams fighting against relegation - Tonnerre and PWD. A handful of spectators thronged the Military stadium to watch the match played under very bright weather and reinforced security. Understandably, nothing could be left to chance after the violent confrontation between the fans of Sahel and Canon last weak at the same venue.
Yesterday’s encounter failed to produce the desired fireworks. It was even below expectation. This was however foreseeable. The unenviable positions of the two teams on the elite league table can be considered a true reflection of their prowess. Prior to yesterday’s match, Tonnerre was second from the bottom with 14 points while PWD was one position ahead with 17 points. The virgin tie of yesterday did not work in the favour of both teams which continue to trail the table — 16th position for PWD and 17th for Tonnerre in a championship with 18 teams.
Most spectators who braved the sunshine and difficult condition (standing for two hours to watch the match) went back home disappointed. The teams failed to impress with their amateurish style of play. Not even one player caught the attention of spectators. Both attacks lacked stamina. Passes were untargeted, kicks wild and foul play the order of the day. The only thing worth noting during yesterday’s match was therefore the numerous yellow cards dished out to the players by central referee, Mezing Agar.
Meanwhile, Cotonsport continues to top the league table after their 1 - 0 victory over University of Ngaoundere yesterday in Garoua.
