Lions Called to Camp
Some 23 players of the national football team begin training in Yaounde next Sunday.
The dust raised by the brilliant performance of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in Cotonou last Saturday is yet to settle. Here once again are the Lions in the limelight.. Coach Artur Jorge and the Director of the Administrative Unit of the National Football Team have selected 23 players for an intensive training session ahead of the crucial encounter against the Libyan national team on June 19. The training would run from June 12 to 18 in Yaounde.
The list is made up essentially of the 18 players who defended Cameroon honourably in Benin last Saturday. Five local players would join them. They are: goalkeeper Amour Patrick Tignyemb of Coton Sport Garoua; defenders Seme of Racing of Bafoussam and Enam Alexis of Astres of Douala; Midfielder Nzekou of Coton Sport Garoua and striker Mboudgui Denis of Sahel of Maroua.
The training session in Yaounde would be an occasion for Captain Song Bahanag and his mates to fine-tune their skills so as to avoid any surprises on June 19. Unlike Benin, Libya is no easy ride in Group 3. Last Friday, Group leaders, Côte d’Ivoire, managed only a goalless draw with Libya in Tripoli. The Elephants dominated the game, but found it difficult to break down Libya`s packed defence until the later stages of the game. Similarly, in the away match against Libya on June 18 2004 in Tripoli, Libya held Cameroon to a virgin tie. This is an indication that Libya’s force lies in it’s defence; wherefore the need for Cameroon to seek an adequate attack strategy for June 19.
With barely three matches to the end of the on-going 2006 World Cup/African Cup of Nations joint eliminatories (June 19: Cameroon v Libya; September 4: Côte d’Ivoire v Cameroon and October 9: Cameroon v Egypt) each match is as important as a final. The Lions have no other option but to win all their matches. A victory against Libya on June 19, could propel the Indomitable Lions to the helm of Group C; hoping that Group Leaders, Côte d’Ivoire, stumble.
