Cameroon coach goes unpaid
Martin Etonge
Artur Jorge has not received a single paycheque from his employers in Cameroon, five months after being appointed coach of the Indomitable Lions.
The Portuguese coach has not made an official complaint yet about the non-payment of his salary.
But a top official of Cameroon`s football federation - Fecafoot - told BBC Sport on Wednesday that the situation is "worrying".
Fecafoot secretary general Atangana Mballa said: "We`re already five months into the contract with Artur Jorge but we haven`t paid him a penny.
"It`s not a nice situation especially as we`re owing other coaches as well," he added.
The Cameroon government, which appoints and pays national coaches, also owes former coach Winfried Schafer and technical director Robert Corfou.
Schafer has already taken his case to world governing body Fifa, saying he is owed US$300,000 in salary arrears.
Frenchman Corfou`s situation is more dire. He has not been paid for ten months, and the figure is believed to be US$200,000.
In March, Sports and Physical Education Minister Philippe Mbarga Mboa notified Corfou that his four-year contract would not be renewed.
The contract ended this week, leaving a frustrated Corfou to ponder over what might have been.
"It`s a pity that I wasn`t given the means to help develop Cameroon football," he said.
"Not only could the Ministry of Sport not pay me, but they could not also sponsor most of my project."
Government officials have acknowledged the debts but say the coaches have to be patient.
