Sundowns through to final
Justin Pearce reports from Luanda as Mamaelodi Sundowns set up an African Champions League final against El Ahly.
South Africa`s Mamelodi Sundowns are through to the final of the African Champions League after beating Angola`s Petro Atletico on penalties.
The Sundowns set up a showdown with Egyptian side El Ahly despite a 2-0 defeat in the second leg of the semi-final in Luanda on Sunday.
That levelled the aggregate score at 2-2 and and it was the Sundowns who held their nerve in the shootout scoring five out of five to wrap up victory.
The Angolans went into the match looking to avenge their first leg defeat and there was jubilation among the home fans when Kapela Mbiavanga scored from a corner in the 25th minute.
Mbiavanga added a second early in the second half but the Sundowns` spirited defence held out until the final whistle to set up penalties.
Petro striker Tico missed the first and that proved enough to send the Sundowns through and bring an end to the premature celebrations of the Atletico supporters.
