Morientes` goals give Real Madrid 2-1 victory over sorry Sevilla
MADRID,
Real Madrid extended their unbeaten streak over Sevilla in their Santiago Bernabeu stadium to 14 games with a 2-1 victory on Saturday.
Spanish international striker Fernando Morientes prolonged Sevilla`s sorry record - which stretches back 17 seasons - with goals just a few minutes each side of half time.
However, Real Madrid could have been left to regret the myriad of squandered of chances during the first half, before Morientes finally broke the deadlock four minutes before the break, as the Andalusian visitors nearly managed to steal a point late in the game.
Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane and Roberto Carlos all had several chances to score for the defending Spanish champions in the first 45 minutes but were denied a goal by either their own poor finishing or the agility of Sevilla goalkeeper Antonio Notario.
Morientes finally gave Real Madrid some reward for their almost complete control of the game during the first period by latching onto a pass from Zidane and sending it past Notario.p
Morientes got his second just seven minutes into the second half with an excellent individual effort from inside the area.
However, Sevilla tried to salvage something from the game.
Throwing everything into attack, Sevilla striker Moises Garcia went close on no less than three occasions before finally finding the net on 75 minutes, after connecting with a cross from Javi Casquero.
Both Moises and his team mate Pablo Alfaro went close to getting an equaliser in the final 15 minutes before Madrid ran out as the winners.
