Draws For Africa Cup of Nations Saturday
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has devised a new system.
The 16 teams to take part in the final phase of the 24th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations billed for January 24th to February 14th 2004 in Tunisia early next year will soon know their adversaries in the first round. The draws will be made in Tunis, Tunisia, next Saturday. According to a release from the Confederation of African Football, a new system will be used for the draw.
Hosts Tunisia, defending champions Cameroon, Senegal and Nigeria, would lead the four groups in the first round. The remaining 12 countries have been pooled into three groups of four teams each. South Africa, Egypt, DR Congo and Algeria make up category two. Kenya and newcomers who include Benin, Rwanda and Zimbabwe would not face each other at the first stage, as they have been put into one group; category four. Mali, Burkina Faso, Morocco and Guinea are in category three.
Tunisia, will head group A while defending champions, Cameroon, will lead group C. Lots will be cast between Nigeria and Senegal to determine who leads Groups B and D. The main draw will be in a reverse form as it will begin with teams in category four. The second team for groups A to D will be chosen from category four, the third side taken from category three, while a team from category two completes each quarter. This arrangement means that Cameroon could be in a group with Egypt and Morocco, while Nigeria might be paired with South Africa, Mali and Benin.
