Confederations Cup final goes ahead
Fifa has confirmed that Sunday´s Confederations Cup final between France and Cameroon will go ahead in Paris despite the tragic death of Marc-Vivien Foe.
Cameroon midfielder Foe collapsed on the pitch during the second half of Thursday´s semi-final.
Foe played a lot of his club football in France, including a spell at Lyon where Thursday´s match was staged.
Cameroon won the match, against Colombia, 1-0 and will now play France, who defeated Turkey 3-2, on Sunday.
France captain Marcel Desailly had questioned whether the final should be played, but fifa has confirmed the fixture will go ahead.
"Yes the game will go ahead as planned," said Aaron Leiblang, fifa´s media officer at the Confederations Cup.
"I don´t have anything to add to that at the moment. Mr Blatter is just now arriving in Lyon to offer his personal condolences to Mr Foe´s family and the Cameroon camp.
"The fifa flag and Cameroon flag will be flying at half-mast."
Tributes have been pouring in for the 28-year-old Foe, who is believed to have suffered an aneurysm.
"My opinion is that during a competition like the Confederations Cup, football must go on," said Blatter.
"This is the first time in 28 years with fifa that such a tragedy has occurred. I followed the match on television, I saw the player collapse and very fast I had a bad feeling."
