"Maybe we have still to learn", says Patrick Vieira
LONDON
- Arsenal FC midfielder Patrick Vieira said he is happy for his side qualifying to the second phase of the Champions League, but admitted that the hard work is just beginning.
"We`re very happy to get through the first round. It`s really important to have done that but there is no way we can look too far forward and say we have a chance to win the Champions League because it is far away and we will be up against the really big teams now.
"We didn`t have a good start but we`ve finished well in the group.
"Maybe we have still to learn how to stay and keep the ball more when we are in a winning position.
"But maybe we have still to learn how to stay and keep the ball more when we are in a winning position and not just go chasing more goals. We are good at that and the fans enjoy watching us go forward.
"We`ve got to try to get points away from home in the Champions League now.
"That will be vital in the second round because we know we will face even stronger opposition.
"But anything can happen. Just look at last season. It looked an easy thing for Real Madrid and yet they didn`t win the final.
"Now they have qualified for the second round after just four games and yet they are in trouble in something like 15th place in the Spanish League.
"When Leeds United lost 4-0 to Barcelona people were saying the Champions League would be too much for them but then they went right on to the semi-finals. So let`s wait and see," said the French star.
His teammate 32-year-old veteran striker Dennis Bergkamp added:
"Sometimes I feel that getting through the first stage can be the hardest job and we are delighted to have done that, but we`ve still got that thing where when 2-0 up, we go looking to make it 3-0 and suddenly it is 2-1.
"We let things slip against Blackburn on Saturday and until Thierry`s goal we did the same against Mallorca.
"But we`ve worked hard and made our opportunity to go on. Now we should be more confident we can do well.``
