Canon take command of national league
Martin Etonge
For the first time this season Canon Yaounde are leaders of the national division one league after 13 days of action.
Canon traveled to Garoua to punish locals Coton Sport 1-0. Canon’s Chadian striker, Francis Oumar who netted four in Canon’s 6-0 pounding of Cintra Yaounde in the previous league game was on the trigger again in the 31st minute.
Coton Sport had no reply, reminiscent of the title game between both sides in the last day of play last season when Canon pinned Coton Sport down to a one all score to lift the title.
However, Canon’s lead of the league is precarious because two other clubs, Bamboutos Mbouda and PWD Bamenda also have 24 points a piece. Canon are benefiting only from the goal advantage rule.
Bamboutos also had a brilliant performance away in Douala where they edged struggling Caiman Douala 1-0, while at home PWD managed a 0-0 tie with a more determined Racing Bafoussam.
Consequently, there is great tension on the top as Canon, Bamboutos, PWD and Coton Sport who are just a point adrift of the other three keep their chances of staying at least until the end of the first round which is only two days to go.
Still in day 13 actions, there were two other sweet away wins for Victoria United and Cintra Yaounde who edged Unisport Bafang 1-0. Victoria United alias OPOPO, beat Tonnerre with two goals from Martin Mouansie in the first half.
The defeat encouraged Tonnerre fans to call for the head of club chairman, Antoine Essomba Eyenga. “Either he goes or he sacks the Swiss coach Raoul Savoy who is of no use to the team”, the fans shouted.
Tonnerre have been in damn poor shape since the beginning of the season. They stand third from bottom, within the red zone, with 11 points, just two after from Sable Batie who are last.
Mount Cameroon Buea gained three places on the table thanks to a 2-1 home win over Stade Bandjoun . Mount Cameroon stand 11 with 13 points.
It was also a nice home win for Renaissance Yaounde, 1-0 against Fovu Baham. Renaissance had lost their two previous games. So this win was timely to avoid a crisis.
The other draw of the day happened in Bafoussam where Sable fought hard to level one all with Union Douala in stoppage time.
