Coton Sport take first place from PWD
Martin Etonge
Against all expectations Coton Sport Garoua have settled in the driving seat of the national division one football table following their 1-0 away win over rivals Bamboutos Mbouda. Coton Sport have also been helped to that position by Union Douala who defeated hitherto leaders PWD Bamenda in Douala 2-0.
In a game described as the best of all day 12 actions, Union came out full force to frustrate PWD. Though PWD provided a true counter force, they could not withstand the striking power of Union. Rene Njoh was fouled in the box in the 15th minute. Soman A Choyi got trhe curtain raiser from the penalty spot. With 25 minutes left to go Romuald Ebouele took the second.
It was the third defeat of PWD in six games and there are fears from fans that their star is already fading.
Coton Sport did not only fold their hands and let Union work for them. They performed a real hold up in the backyard of their perpetual opponents, Bambouitos. Fans saw it as a perilous journey to Mbouda. But from 25 metres, Ali Hassan powered the ball into the net in the 65th minute.
The victory certainly boosted the morals of Coton Sport players a week before their crunch away leg Caf Cup game against Maranatha Fiokpo of Togo. It also silenced critics who predicted worst days ahead for the club.
Though both Coton Sport and PWD have 23 points each, Coton Sport possess the technical and goal advantage.
At the other end of the table, Tonnerre Yaounde have jumped two places to leave the bottom position to Sable thanks to a vital 1-0 win over Renaissance. So Tonnerre chairman, Essomba Eyenya could come out of his shell to blast detractors who are asking for his head.
The big winners of the day were Canon Yaounde who pounded Cintra 6-0 in an advanced match last Thursday. Francis Oumar has become enemy number one to Cintra after he hit Cintra four times.
Mount Cameroon have hopefully found their winning form as they beat Sable Batie 1-0, the second consecutive victory. Unfortunately, they have lost six points from the general classification table as penalty for fielding an irregular player in their day nine and ten matches. They had lost those games so the points were taken off what they already had. Consequently, Mount Cameroon have entered the red zone, with only 10 points, two adrift bottom placed Sable Batie.
Much did not change on the table, however. Racing and neighbours Fovu had a one all tie, just like Stade and Caiman. Victoria United recorded their fourth win, beating Unisport Bafang 1-0 at home.
