PWD consolidate position on top of division one league table
Martin Etonge
Contrary to expectations PWD Bamenda have instead increased the gap on top of the national division one football league table after day 10 games.
The Abakwa Boys inflicted a 1-0 defeat on hosts Mount Cameroon Buea, thereby pushing Mount Cameroon into serious crisis as it was their sixth consecutive defeat. And now it will be difficult for the players to prevail on club owner Calvin Foinding to keep head coach Alain Wabo. After their fourth straight defeat, Foinding wanted to sack Wabo, but the players pleaded that the coach be given another chance.
The win enabled PWD to create a 3-point gap in front of runners up Coton Sport Garoua who could not do better than force a one all draw on Racing Bafoussam in their own backyard. Hamadou Soussia equalized four minutes to full time. PWD count 22 points, Coton Sport 19.
Even Bamboutos who had hitherto kept the pressure on PWD also failed to get nearer the leaders as they were beaten 1-0 by Fovu Baham. Cintra Yaounde who recorded a 0-0 draw with Sable in Bafoussam have moved up to third position. Both Cintra and Bamboutos count 18 points a piece.
The big game of the day between Canon Yaounde and Union Douala in Yaounde ended in a one all draw. Canon took off the pressure and opened up the game after goal getter Parfait Ngon A Ndjam equalized before the break. Joseph Bwanda had put the visitors a goal ahead in the 18th minute.
The first game in Yaounde also ended in a draw. Augustin Binya of Tonnerre put both Tonnerre and Unisport Bafang on two all in the 77th minute and caused the death of an alleged Unisport fan. The unidentified fan could not withstand the equalizer and reportedly suffered from a heart failure.
The draw left Tonnerre second from bottom, with 8 points, just like Caiman who lost 1-2 to visiting Renaissance Ngoumou.
It was a bad day for clubs from the South West province. Apart from Mount Cameroon, Victoria United Limbe also went down 0-1 in Batie. Mount Cameroon with 10 points and Victoria United with 9 points are neighbours to the relegation line.
